Today, patients are as concerned about their appearance as their health, and we completely understand this outlook because looking your best can help you to feel your best.
Fillings used to be purely functional, and their appearance was not important. As dentistry progressed, we have found better ways to improve on common procedures like fillings. Instead of dark-looking amalgam restorations, we offer tooth-colored composite fillings so that our patients can look and feel great.
What Causes Tooth Decay?
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 96% of American adults will experience tooth decay during their lifetimes. It is one of the most common conditions that young people and adults face. In many cases, it’s also one of the most preventable conditions.
Dental decay occurs because bacteria on your teeth and gums create an acidic environment that causes the breakdown of the protective enamel coating on your teeth. When bacteria break through your enamel, they can infect the softer interior of your tooth and create cavities, also known as caries.
When decay first starts, you probably will not experience any symptoms. That is why keeping your regular professional dental cleaning and exam appointment is so important. We take x-rays periodically to look for areas of decay so that we can stop it before it creates a serious problem.
When we treat decay, we will make sure you are comfortable before we begin your procedure. Then, either Dr. Tuttle or Dr. Colt will completely remove the decay from your tooth, clean the area, and seal it with a composite filling.
Composite (White) Fillings
A big benefit of composite fillings is that they match your teeth exactly so that the average person would never notice you have them. We choose the shade that will blend with your remaining tooth structure, and once we place the material in your tooth, your dentist will polish and shape it, creating a seamless result. Composite fillings are strong and reliable.
In addition to the aesthetic benefits of composite fillings, they also allow us to retain more of your natural tooth structure than traditional amalgam fillings do. This allows for a more conservative treatment option.
Cosmetic Dental Bonding
Composite fillings are useful for minor repairs to your teeth. If you have small chips, gaps, or oddly shaped teeth, dental bonding might work for you. It is a non-invasive, less expensive way to address some small aesthetic flaws with your smile and improve your appearance.
